2010 Is Less Than Two Years Away

TW: This blog will focus on governance issues in the coming months, but electoral speculation is too fun to give up cold turkey. The 2010 Congressional races will be interesting as always, what we cannot know is what the electoral mood will be then. Will Obama be popular? What crises will have emerged as the key concerns?

Regardless the Republicans will be defending more Senate seats than the Dems (19-16) including some blue/purple state seats with incumbents getting long in tooth. I would expect a couple of Republican retirements (remember it is much harder to stay motivated as the minority party facing difficult re-election than vice versa this is a key dynamic favoring any majority party).

On the other hand 2010 will be the last time for a long while that the Republicans have to defend more seats as 2012 will cycle all of those 2006 Dem Senators who were swept into power in the Dem wave of '06.
