Top Ten SI Cover Of All-Time

TW: This has been always one of my favorite Sports Illustrated covers. Dick Allen was a great player but known more for his brashness than accomplishments even though he was one of the best players during the period of the mid-60's to mid-70's. He was cutting edge making the transition from the crew cut era to the longer haired 70's. But this cover is particularly notable because of the very cool White Sox uniform (you know bright red for the "white" sox) combined with the cig in the mouth. I recall reading somewhere that the shot of the cig in a Allen's mouth while in the dugout has not happened before or since, not so good for the league image etc.

yes, thank goodness no more pics of ball players with cigarettes. chewing a golf ball sized tobacco wad is so much better for the MLB's image.

Next we'll have pictures of them with their favorite needles, now that would be a great image!
