TW: D-Day is passing from living memory to historical etchings. D-Day retains its resonance due to its metaphorical role for Americans and others throughout the world. D-Day represents (accurately or otherwise) some of the best bits of America- self-sacrifice in the pursuit of liberty, performed primarily by the unheralded members of our society embodied by the G.I. Joes deployed on June 6th, 1944. Ultimately the impact of D-Day is not really the direct impact that battle had on World War II or even France, but rather those metaphorical implications which frame the views Americans have of themselves and outsiders of Americans.
Omaha Beach is the living reminder of those ideals. It is a beautiful and placid locale, which if at possible all Americans should visit, it is after all American territory.
