Friends and family know that the White house is located in a loft building in Chicago’s River North neighborhood, known for having the greatest concentration of art galleries in the city. We’re not huge gallery goers but it is nice to look in the windows when we’re out walking.
Besides, we don't need to leave the building to see art - we have our own gallery. Our building (which was built in 1920 and served as a freight terminal and then as a printing facility before being renovated as a residential property in 1995) has a huge lobby and wide open hallways. What better way to use all that open space than as an art gallery?
The building has an arrangement with the gallery community and every quarter a different group of local artists hang their works on our walls. There’s an ‘opening’ reception with wine & cheese and the artists are there to mingle with the crowd. It’s a win-win for all involved – local artists get some exposure and residents get to view some art on their way in and out of the building.
This quarter’s show is definitely one of my favorites – there are 6 artists on display with several specializing in Chicago scenes. I went downstairs to take photos of the ones I really like but the lighting isn’t quite up to gallery standards, neither is the steadiness of my hand. Below are some photos from the artists’ on-line galleries. Don’t you wish you lived in our building?
