I was in NYC last weekend – a very quick trip but still good to get back. I saw this in the window of a paper store in the West Village. It's a book-cut sculpture by London artist Su Blackwell.Ms. Blackwell creates these beautiful pieces from second-hand books, the sculptures can take up to 2 months to create and each one is specific to that book:
The book has to resonate with me somehow, either in an illustration, or in part of the story. I need that spark of inspiration ... I began feeling guilty about cutting up the books but I had the integrity that I would create something magical from it.Some of her other sculptures from her website:

This was truly amazing and interesting. I am always in awe when I see a new form or "art" or "craft" created - have to love the mind of this artist who thought to create such a thing.
The "craft person" that is in me had me wondering what she used to stiffen the objects, if at all. I could understand those creations contained in an enclosed box may not need stiffening, but I wonder about the freestanding ones.
After going through all her pictures on her website, I was able to understand somewhat how she made some of them - all very interesting to me.

Glad you liked it - I actually stopped in my tracks when I walked past the window. They probably thought I was nuts taking photos on the sidewalk.
I was going to post a video that had a demonstration of how she makes the sculptures but the post was already pretty long.
