TW: Am sure all of you have pondered the evolution of the ear flap on baseball helmets. Now you know the innovators were two Minnesota Twins, Earl Battey and Tony Oliva, who had their equipment manager attach impromptu flaps on their helmets in about 1964. Soon enough (about 1980) they became mandatory. How no one (other than Ray Chapman in 1920 or so) was killed by a pitch pre-helmets is beyond me.
