Things I Like - Odds & Ends

One of the things I found endlessly entertaining during the two years I lived in London were the local pubs. I didn’t actually like the pubs themselves – which were usually dark, smelly, smoky and with bad food. But the names of the pubs, not to mention the signs, were seriously amusing.

I still remember some of the pubs I would see on my way to and from the office -

Lamb Tavern
Elephant & Castle
The Crutched Friar
Slug & Lettuce
The Pepys Bar

Alright, that last one wasn't really a pub, but it was in the hotel on Pepys Street near the office that I used on return trips to London. Samuel Pepys is famous for his diary containing eyewitness accounts of the Great Plague and the Great Fire of London.

btw – it’s pronounced Peeps, not Peppys…and yes, the London cabbie laughed out loud when he realized where I wanted to go.

These pub signs via Dark Roasted Blend – parts One and Two took me back
