
These schematic diagrams (the concept was developed by Harry Beck in 1931 to depict the London Tube system) show not the true geography of the area covered, but the relative positions of stations along the lines in relation to each other.
For someone who is directionally challenged, these maps are the only reason I can get from one point in a city to another without getting hopelessly lost. And when you happen to be in a foreign city, they are absolutely necessary.
