Things I Like - Books

LFW: I've always loved to read. As a child, getting lost in a book was the easiest way to find some private time in a house full of kids. My desire to escape the everyday through reading hasn't changed much over the years. While I occasionally pick up a non-fiction book, and I pretty much read the New Yorker cover to cover, most of what I read for pleasure is fiction, and true escapism at that.

I recently re-read the Jasper Fforde "Thursday Next" series*
The Eyre Affair
Lost In a Good Book
The Well of Lost Plots
Something Rotten

The stories follow the adventures of Thursday Next, an officer in the Literary Detection department of her world's Special Operations police force. Literary Detection forces are necessary here, what with the ability to move between the real world and the book world (where the characters have lives of their own when they're not "performing" in the written works). It's a world as imaginative and entertaining as the one created by J.K. Rowling for Harry Potter, but at a slightly more adult level.

True escapism, and all with a British accent

Hey, I just found out that there was a 5th book - First Among Sequels. Learned this on Jasper's website (http://www.jasperfforde.com/index2.html) so I'm very excited. You can also get a feel for the books if you're interested - check out the precis link on the Welcome page.

* Thanks to my sister Janice for introducing me to Thursday and her exploits!

I couldn't get into The Eyre Affair. But my taste runs to the inverse of yours--mostly non-fiction with a few novels thrown in, so maybe that's why. Plus, I'm not much for sci-fi elements and that whole stopping-time thing right at the beginning was what stopped me all 3 times I tried to read it.

I DID like Fford's Nursery Crime Division books--there are two so far, with Jack Spratt as the detective on the case. The first was something to do with Humpty Dumpty, the second is titled The Fourth Bear. A lot fun, a lot of laughs.

I'm signing here because I'm too lazy to create a blogspot ID--Amy! :)
