TW: These are the type stories that get lost amidst the shuffle yet can have profound impacts. UK Prime Minister Brown has suggested the Chinese may end up providing ground troops to support the operations in Afghanistan. National security analyst Tom Barnett strongly endorses the concept- "This, obviously, would be a great step in re branding the PLA [Chinese Army] for the future. It would also isolate Russia nicely in its intransigence."
I suspect many others in particular on the right in the US would feel differently. To me it would be a further step towards integrating positively China into the "Western" security and economic structures by which the post WWII world has been governed. If China is to enjoy the fruits of a stable world they need to participate in the stabilization efforts. Correspondingly unless we intend carry these burdens solo (because you can safely assume the Europeans are not going to increase their support and increasingly carrying burdens solo is not really a feasible option) then we will need to share the power as well.
From PressTV:
"...Brown told New York's Council on Foreign Relations on Friday of China's possible plans for deploying troops to the war-torn country, amid the worst fighting with insurgents since the US-led coalition invaded the country in 2001. The premier said he expected more nations not currently involved in fighting to join the Afghan mission, comprised of 41 nations..."
